18. Dedication of a statue of Gordianus III
Αὐτοκράτορα Καίσαρα Μᾶρκον Ἀντώνιον Γορδιανόν |
Imperator Caesar Marcus Antonius Gordianus
Inscription on an individual, rectangular, profiled statue base consisting of a single block, set against the west wall of the Sebasteion. We found this stone lying face down so that the inscription was not visible.
Height: 137 cm; (height of base: 25 cm); length: 51 cm; depth: 55 cm; letters: 1.5-2 cm
Jones 1979, no. 3 (pl. 77.2); SEG 27 (1977), no. 923; İnan 1993, p. 230, no. 10 (pl. XIII, C; XXI.22-23; XXII).
The title Σεβαστός (Augustus) is occasionally omitted from Gordian's titulature (Jones). Gordian III ruled from 238 to 244 CE, but this does not appear to be the original inscription of the statue dedicated to him. There seem to be traces of erasure in line 4, and the layout of the text is irregular throughout (Jones).
