48. Epitaph of Nearchos and his mother Ge

καὶ Μείλων καὶ Νανα
οἱ Μόλητος, Νανα δὲ
διὰ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς Ἀρτέ–
μωνος, Νέαρχον τὸν
ἀδελφὸν ἡμῶν καὶ Γῆ<ν>

Κereas, Moles, Meilon and Nana, children of Moles (Nana through her husband Artemon), in memory of our brother Nearchos and our mother Ge, daughter of Nearchos.

Round funerary column, found in a cemetery between Horzum/Cibyra and İbecik by Holleaux. The stone was later transfered to İbecik, where it was seen by Bean in the nineteen fifties. It is now built upside down into the perimeter wall of the main mosque in İbecik.

Height: at least 51 cm; diameter (profile): 44 cm; letters: 2-2.5 cm.

L. 1 : On the rare name Κερεας cf. IGLS 3.2 1114; Robert 1937, pp. 366-367 and Zgusta 1964, nos. 580.2-3. The name is attested several times in the inscription from Dereköy published by Wörrle and Wurster (1997, col. B I 21, B I 47, B II 7, B II 12 and B II 42; cf. p. 442-443). On Μόλης see no. 63.

L. 2: Μείλων (Μίλων): cf. MAMA 10 App. I 186, 26; Zgusta 1964, no. 888.5. Νανα, written also Ναννα, is a common name in Asia Minor, particularly in Galatia and Phrygia (in Lycaonia mostly as Ναννα). It is also attested in Cibyra; cf. IK Kibyra I 192; 207; 272; 283; 290; 343; 345; in the form Νανας (probably Νανάς): 218; 256; 282. Zgusta 1964, no.1013.1; cf. 1013.2: 1013.6; 1013.15; 1013.24.

L. 4-5 : on Ἀρτέμων see no. 5; on Νέαρχος see no. 28. On the name of the deceased in the accusative case no. 35.

L. 6 : Γῆ: see no. 40. The name is attested five times in IK Kibyra I (nos. 49; 113; 198; 230; 325), in one case (no. 49) in an honorary inscription for a woman whose father was also called Nearchos.
